TUCSON, Ariz.--Six Adrian College student-athletes have been named "preseason All-Americans" in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper 2016 Watch List chosen by NCAA Division III head coaches, it was announced this week.
Seniors Tommy Eng (Troy, Mich./Athens High School), Jordan Frayer (New Boston, Mich./Huron HS), Jeff Gertley (Northville, Mich.) headline the Adrian contingent, plus junior Ryan Dorow (South Haven, Mich.) and sophomores Collin Korte (Bowling Green, Ohio/Toledo St. John's HS), Tommy Parsons (New Albany, Ohio).
Judging by the watch list, pitching will be a strength for the Bulldogs this season as four of the six CBN selections will be on the mound. Frayer (7-2 record) is the top returning earned-run average (2.40) and strikeouts (42) leader in 71-1/3 innings for the Bulldogs, earning D3baseball.com All-Mideast Region Third Team and All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association First Team accolades a year ago. Eng went 2-1 with a save and 2.57 ERA in 42 innings, fanning 25 and issuing just eight walks. Parsons compiled an 8-1 record, 3.10 ERA, 28 strikeouts and 11 walks in 52.1 innings as a freshman. Korte emerged as AC's closer with five saves, a 4-1 mark, 35 strikeouts and 3.15 ERA in 19 appearances.
Dorow, a shortstop, was named a first-team all-region pick both by the American Baseball Coaches' Association and D3baseball.com in 2015 and is a two-time All-MIAA First Team pick. He batted .383 with 59 hits in 154 at-bats and scored 38 runs, collecting 13 doubles, two triples and 10 home runs. He had a .464 on-base percentage and .688 slugging while recording 38 runs batted in.
An outfielder, Gertley posted career numbers last spring en route to NCAA Division III Mideast Region All-Tournament Team, third-team D3baseball.com and first-team All-MIAA honors. He scored 39 runs while recording 19 doubles, two triples and 11 home runs with 48 RBI. He tied the school record for home runs in a single season, had 109 total bases for second and .736 slugging percentage and RBI are both fourth.
The Bulldogs were also in the "other teams receiving votes" category in the CBN's national rankings, placing 43rd if the preseason poll was extrapolated beyond the Top-40. Adrian was the only MIAA representative in the poll.
Adrian--which fashioned a 33-12 record last year while capturing its seventh MIAA championship and eighth NCAA tournament bid since 2008--begins the 2016 campaign on Wednesday, March 2, at Millsaps College.
