FREELAND, Mich.--Adrian College Baseball has swept the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) weekly awards, it was announced on Monday. Junior catcher Dakota Cararo (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln High School) is the MIAA Player of the Week, while sophomore Tommy Parsons (New Albany, Ohio) has been named the conference's top pitcher for the second straight week and third time already this season.
Cararo led Adrian with a slashline of .667/.700/1.333 during a 3-2 week for the Bulldogs. He tripled home a run to spark a three-run rally in the ninth inning for a walk-off 14-13 win over Heidelberg (Adrian trailed 13-5 after 5-1/2) on Wednesday. His heroics didn't end there as he hit his first home run of the season with a man aboard in the fifth inning versus Kalamazoo to break up a pitchers' duel. Adrian won 2-0 in Friday's opener of a four-game MIAA series.
The accounting major was perfect behind the dish with a 1.000 fielding percentage on 15 total chances, and he threw out two of three runners attempting to steal.
For the season, Cararo is batting .360 with four doubles and six runs batted in in 14 games played.
Parsons, who also was the MIAA Pitcher of the Week for March 8 and March 28, posted his second straight shutout win, shutting down previously MIAA undefeated Kalamazoo, 2-0, on Friday. The business management major scattered six singles, he walked one batter and struck out two. He allowed just one runner past second base and the first three hits he gave up were either bloop or infield singles.
He hasn't allowed a run in his last 16 innings to lower his earned-run average to 2.33, which is a season low and ranks fourth in the conference. He is 4-1 on the season, co-leading the MIAA with those four victories.
This marks the first time this season that Adrian has swept the MIAA baseball weekly awards.
Tuesday's non-conference home game versus Baldwin-Wallace has been postponed (no make-up date yet announced), but the Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday and Saturday against MIAA foe Calvin. The first two games of the series will be held in Adrian at Nicolay Field on Friday, starting with a 7-inning game at 2 p.m. followed by nine at 4:30 p.m.
