INDIANAPOLIS--The Adrian College baseball team has climbed two spots to No. 3 in the new NCAA Division III Mideast Region rankings, published on the NCAA.com website Thursday.
The Bulldogs, who have a 27-8 in-division record and are 28-8 overall, jumped over DePauw and Denison universities as well as Washington & Jefferson College--which will host the regional tournament next month.
Adrian--which is 20-2 in its last 22 outings--will seek to extend its eight-game winning streak this weekend against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Hope College on Friday (at Hope, 2/4:30 p.m.; G1 Live stats, G2 Live stats) and Saturday (at Adrian's Nicolay Field, 1/3:30 p.m.; G1 Live stats, G2 Live stats) to wrap up the regular season. It will be Adrian's Senior Day on Saturday.
The top three Mideast teams are Wooster and La Roche colleges and Adrian. The NCAA will conduct two more regional polls on May 11 and May 14 (championship selections).
The regional rankings are used to determine the 56-team field for the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship, which will take place from Thursday-Monday, May 18-22, at eight regional sites across the nation. Six or eight of the best teams from the Mideast will descend at W&J's Ross Memorial Park for the third year in a row for the right to qualify for the Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis.
The Bulldogs, who are also receiving votes in both national polls, boast one of the NCAA's most well-rounded clubs: offensively--T-1st with .355 batting average, 7th with .431 on-base percentage, 15th with .483 slugging percentage, 19th with 433 hits, 23rd with 8.2 runs per game; defensively--30th with .94 double plays per game, 22nd with .968 fielding percentage; and pitching--18th with five shutouts, 38th with 3.47 earned-run average.
