FREELAND, Mich.--Adrian College, which swept the regular-season and tournament baseball championships in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, also swept the conference's final weekly honors as announced on Monday, for the week of competition ending on May 12, 2019. Junior Pierce Banks (Sterling Heights, Mich./Parkway Christian High School) is the MIAA Pitcher of the Week while senior third baseman Dugan Darnell (Northville, Mich.) hauls in MIAA Position Player of the Week honors.
Banks earned the win in Adrian's 2-0 victory over Hope on Friday in the MIAA championship game, throwing eight innings while allowing just three hits. Banks struck out four in the contest, as the Bulldogs prevailed as the MIAA Tournament champions. The exercise science major is a four-time recipient of this award, including three times this season (also April 15 and March 19) and on April 10, 2017.
On the season, Banks is 8-2 while lowering his earned-run average to 3.68 with 58 strikeouts in 61.1 innings of work. He moved into a fifth-place tie for victories on the Bulldogs career chart. He is 23-5 lifetime with 185 strikeouts, which is sixth in school history.
Darnell was a key factor at the plate, in the field and on the mound for Adrian to help the Bulldogs win the MIAA tournament title for the third season in a row. At the plate, Darnell went 4-for-9 with two runs scored, a double, a triple, two walks and four runs batted in. Against Alma on Wednesday to start the tourney, Darnell went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a double and one run scored. Along with 1.000 fielding percentage on 14 opportunities, Darnell also tallied three saves in three appearances, throwing 4.0 innings with three strikeouts to one walk in Adrian's three tournament wins. The marketing major repeats as the MIAA's top offensive weekly award as he debuted on May 6.
Darnell leads the conference with eighth saves, breaking Chris Dubbs' Adrian single-season record of seven set in 1997. Offensively, he owns a .343/.486/.540 slashline with a team-leading four home runs and 43 RBI, also a career best.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
