Adrian Gold National Championship Streak Comes to an End with 2-1 Loss to Calvin

The Adrian College ACHA Division lll Gold squad saw their National Championship streak come to an end on Saturday night, as they fell to the Calvin Knights 2-1 in Farmington Hills. With the victory the Knights advance to the national tournament in Pelham, Alabama and the Bulldogs see their season come to an end with a record of 14-11-1-1. The loss ends the greatest streak in ACHA Hockey history, as the Bulldogs are the only team in Division lll hockey to win three national titles, all in a row, eclipsing the two-year reign of the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in 2008-09/2009-10.

The Bulldogs scored first in the game on an unassisted goal by Daniel Hudson (Gregory, Mich.) to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but in a game that would be marred by 16 minor penalties between the two teams, Calvin would get a power play goal from David Zwiers to tie the score after two periods.

Adrian would have their chances in the third period but the Calvin penalty killing unit survived nine Adrian power plays in the game, behind the strong play of goaltender Alex Zion who made 31 saves in the contest.

Calvin’s winning goal came off the stick off Jordan Duncan with 11:59 remaining in regulation, and the Bulldogs could not gain the equalizer to send the game into overtime.

Senior goaltender Rick Hennard (Royal Oak, Mich.) took the loss for Adrian, despite blocking 28 shots from the Knights.
