ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College ACHA Division III Gold hockey team pulled out an exciting 4-2 win over Penn State-Behrend on Sunday, scoring two goals in the final minute to win the contest. The Bulldogs dominated the Lions throughout the contest, outshooting Penn State-Behrend, 53-15, but the Bulldogs were unable to solve Lions goaltender Derek Schaffer for most of the afternoon.

Adrian got the only goal of the first period on a shorthanded effort by junior Jake Waldrup (Dexter, Mich.), but the Lions were able to come back with two second period goals, a power-play goal by Nate Pellegrino and an even-strength marker by Nathan Ropelewski, sandwiched around an Adrian goal by sophomore Nick Bordeaux (Warren, Mich.), which made the score 2-2 at the second intermission.

In the third period, Adrian turned up the heat on Schaffer, outshooting the Lions 18-2, but they could not break the tie until the final minute of the contest. With 1:40 remaining in the game, Pellegrino was sent to the penalty box for tripping giving Adrian a golden opportunity on the power play.

The Bulldogs intense pressure led to Lions defenseman Conner Dlubak intentionally pushing the goal off its moorings, which in the game’s final two minutes carries with it a penalty of a penalty shot. Adrian junior Myles Maltz (Mattawan, Mich.) did the honors on the penalty shot, neatly lifting the puck into the net over Schaffer’s left shoulder to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead with just 53 seconds remaining.

The Bulldogs, still on the power play kept the pressure on, however, as senior Eddie Schaffer (Edwardsville, Ill.) added the power-play goal with assists from Maltz and senior Josh Dollinger (Montréal, Québec) with 18 seconds to go to make the final 4-2.

In all, Schaffer was able to make 49 saves for the Lions, while at the other end, Adrian’s Justin Lindgren (Hanahan, S.C.) turned back just 13 Penn State-Behrend shots.

The Gold squad will return to action next Friday night, October 17, when they host the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals at 7 p.m. in Arrington Ice Arena.
