ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College ACHA black men's hockey team comes back to force overtime with the Hope College Flying Dutchmen on Thursday night, but a winner could not be determined, as neither team could score in overtime and the contest ended in a 1-1 tie.
On a night that would belong primarily to the goaltenders, the Dutchmen took an early lead with the only goal of the first period, a power play marker from Garrett Gormley with 4:50 to play in the opening stanza. But that would be the only shot the Dutchman would get by Adrian freshman goaltender Gilbert Oldreive, as he would hold the Dutch scoreless the rest of the way.
Adrian scored the equalizer on their first power play opportunity of the game, when Hope's Ryan Restum was whistled for holding at the 10:00 minute mark of the second period. Fifty-three seconds into the power play, Adrian defenseman Justin McFatridge took a pass from Adrien Sebag and blasted it past Hope goaltender Eric Lipon from the point for his fourth goal of the season to tie the score at one.
Despite no goals being scored the rest of the way, both teams had some excellent opportunities to break the deadlock, but Oldreive and Lipon would not yield. Adrian came close several times during a 2 man advantage situation early in the third period and a 4 on 3 situation in overtime. Hope also had a pair of power play opportunities in the third period, but could not convert a game winner.
In all, Oldreive would stop 46 shots in the Bulldog cage and Lipon would turn away 33 Bulldog attempts on the evening. The two teams will meet again on Friday night in Holland before Adrian returns to Arrington Ice Arena for their final home appearance of the year on Sunday against Schoolcraft, with face off slated for 2:00 PM.
