ADRIAN, Mich.--A wild seven-goal third period broke open a tight 1-0 game as the visiting University of Michigan-Flint Wolverines topped the Adrian College American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 3 men's icers, 5-3, at Arrington Ice Arena on Thursday night.
The Wolverines' Brandon Pirtle scored the game’s only goal of the first two periods with just 30 seconds left before the second intermission to give UM-Flint a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the first of four goals that Pirtle would score on the evening, which would include an empty-net goal to ice the game with 30 seconds left in the third.
Adrian’s Tim Foley tied the game at 1-1, scoring with assists from Scott Mattern and Cameron Mercer 5:23 into the third. The deadlock would last just a little over a minute, however, as Cameron Wolf put UM-Flint back in front 2-1. Henry Gabriel tied the game once again at 2-2 with assists from Foley and Jacob Remelius, but Pirtle scored the next two goals, his 9th and 10th of the season, to record the hat trick and give the Wolverines a 4-2 advantage.
Devon Herzig brought the Bulldogs within one at 4-3 with 5:50 left in the game, as Mercer picked up his second assist of the evening, but the Bulldogs could not get the equalizer; Pirtle scored on a break away with the Bulldog netminder pulled for the extra attacker to make the final 5-3.
The Bulldogs outshot the Wolverines by a 47-23 margin, but UM-Flint goaltender Adam Bryant stood tall for the Wolverines, making 44 often spectacular saves.
The Bulldogs next home action will be Sunday afternoon against the University of Michigan at 5:00 pm at Arrington Ice Arena. Adrian is scheduled to play at Michigan-Flint later tonight (Friday).
