Men’s Hockey Delivers a Baker’s Dozen in Rout of Northland

ADRIAN, Mich. – What a conference opener for the men's hockey team on Friday night (Nov. 4) as the Bulldogs served notice that despite losing a large core of seniors they are still as dangerous as ever. Adrian disposed of Northland College, 13-3, and tied a school record with three short-handed goals including two coming on Northland's first power play in the opening period.

Josh Ranalli scored a man-down at 8:19 of the first on a breakaway with assists going to Chris Stansik and goaltender Scott Shackell. Stansik finished with the one assist and now is two points shy of the MCHA career record by a defenseman set by former teammate Quinn Waller. Stansik overall has 106 points in 87 career games. Grant Telfer followed with another short-hander at 9:20 with an assist from Jordan Watts. It was Telfer's first goal as a Bulldog.

Ranalli scored his second goal of the night at 15:57 of the first at even strength with assists from Kevin Balas and Kyle Gallinger. Watts got into the act with his second goal of the season which proved to be the game-winner at 17:00 of the first with assists from Andrew Dovey and Josh Cousineau. Adrian led 4-0 after 20 minutes and outshot the LumberJacks, 18-4.

The Bulldogs added to their lead on the power play early in the second at 3:26 as Justin Basso scored with assists from Ryan Gieseler and Duston Hebebrand. The onslaught continued with five more goals in the second to build a 10-0 lead. The tenth goal also was a power play tally as Hebebrand scored his third goal of the season with assists from Basso and Shawn Courtney. Courtney ended the game with a pair of assists and a +5 rating.

Colin McIntosh stopped the bleeding at 19:39 of the second at even strength with assists from Kraig Wright and Trevor Leonard. Adrian outshot Northland, 11-5, in the second to hold a 29-9 edge after 40 minutes.

Northland had their best period in the third with a pair of goals and actually held a 17-9 edge in shots on goal in the final stanza. Brady Vandenberk scored on the power play at 3:11 and Wright also scored on a 4-on-4 at 13:45. Adrian finished the third with three goals including their third short-handed goal which was also a hat trick for Balas at 15:57 for Adrian's 13th goal.

Balas led the team with four points and Gallinger and Watts each had three points. Hebebrand and Gieseler each also contributed three points. Telfer finished the game with a team-best +6 rating. Shackell made 15 saves in the third and 23 for the game playing all 60 minutes in net to get his second win at Adrian. AC ended the game 2-for-8 on the power play and were 7-for-8 on the penalty kill.

The 13 goals tied for fifth-most in school history. It also marked the fourth time in 11 games against Northland that Adrian has scored double-digit goals. The last time Adrian had three short-handed goals in a game was Feb. 23, 2008 against Concordia (Wis.). The last time Adrian scored double-digits in a game was Feb. 10, 2010 in a 11-1 win over Concordia (Wis.). The two teams will skate again tomorrow at 3:00 PM as Adrian will look to improve on their 11-0 all-time record against the LumberJacks.
