ADRIAN, Mich. - The visitors from UW-Eau Claire might not be getting another invite by the Adrian College men's hockey team as they upset the Bulldogs for the second straight year at the annual Thanksgiving Hockey Showcase hosted by Adrian at Arrington Ice Arena. A year ago, it was a 4-3 overtime win by the Blugolds and today it was a 2-1 win over the fourth-ranked Bulldogs.
Adrian (6-2) was stifled by the UWEC defensive scheme and took just 18 shots on goal, which was a single-game low for the Bulldogs in their brief history. The Bulldogs also scored just one goal for the first time at home where they have been dominant over the past four-plus seasons (59-4-1).
Adrian got the game's first goal on the power play at 7:22 of the first period. Freshman Lukas Ciotti took a sharp angle shot from the left circle beating Brandon Stephenson to the right corner of the goal. Justin Basso and goaltender Scott Shackell each had an assist on Ciotti's second goal of the season.
The Blugolds tied it up at 1-1 at 15:55 of the first also on the power play. Jon Waggoner got loose in between the circles and scored his second goal of the season on the 5-on-4 with assists from Jared Williams and Devin Mantha.
UW-Eau Claire scored the game-winning goal at 2:32 of the second period at even strength as Tyler Romasco scored his first of the season with assists from Andrew Wilcox and David Donnellan. Wilcox was driven into the boards by Adrian's Grant Telfer as the goal was scored and Telfer was given a five-minute major for boarding and a disqualification on the hit.
Adrian's penalty kill rised to the occasion and prevented any further damage going into the third period. Adrian managed just four shots on goal in the second. Adrian also went on the power play twice in the second but could manage just one shot on goal.
The Blugolds got another chance on the power play in the third as Ryan Gieseler went to the box for a boarding minor at 10:27. Adrian's penalty kill allowed no shots on goal during the two minutes. The Bulldogs had their best chance at tying the game with just under two minutes remaining as Ciotti took a behind-the-back pass from senior Chris Stansik and had a point-blank shot which Stephenson stopped.
Adrian called a timeout with 1:26 left and pulled Shackell for the extra attacker. Dan Barczuk and Josh Cousineau each had a shot on goal down the stretch but neither was a quality scoring chance. UWEC went 1-of-5 on the power play and Adrian was 1-of-3. Stephenson stopped 17-of-18 shots and Shackell made 25 saves falling to 3-2 in net.
Adrian will now play #13 St. Thomas (5-2-1) in the consolation game tomorrow at 4:30 PM. The Tommies were also upset by Buffalo State 3-2 in the first game of the day.
