CEDARBURG, Wis. – Sophomore Zach Wilson has career day with a hat trick as the no. 9 ranked Adrian College men's hockey team topped Concordia University (Wis.) by the score of 9-4. The first goal of the trio marked Wilson's first of his collegiate career. To make it even sweeter, it was a short-handed goal.
Adrian (7-3, 6-1 MCHA) took an early 2-0 lead when Wilson scored back-to-back goals in the first period at 5:55 and 10:31. The Falcons answered with two goals of their own at 10:57 and 16:17 to tie it 2-2 at the first intermission.
Senior Jordan Watts gave the Bulldogs the lead again at the 2:35 mark in the second period with a power play goal, giving Watts a team-leading seven goals on the season. Sophomore Josh Cousineau and junior Zach Graham were on the assists.
Concordia (1-8-2, 1-5-1 MCHA) kept battling and scored two late goals to take its first lead of the game at 4-3 with scores at 14:22 and 15:32.
The Bulldogs settled down and went on and scored six unanswered goals, including five goals in the third period.
Earning multiple goals in the game for Adrian was junior Zach Graham, Watts, and Wilson. Freshman Ryan Gieseler also scored his first collegiate goal.
For the game, Adrian out-shot the Falcons 63-29. Adrian was 4-for-6 on the power play, while CUW was 0-for-5.
In the net for Adrian, freshman Scott Shackell got the nod and goes to 4-2 on the year. He accumulated 25 saves.
Adrian looks to pick up where they left off as the play game two of the two-game series against CUW tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
