ADRIAN, Mich. - In a pressure-packed situation it was a freshman who played it calm as the men's hockey team defeated Lawrence 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the MCHA Harris Cup semifinals at Arrington Ice Arena.
Freshman netminder Scott Shackell made one great save after another totaling 35 in the contest including 13 big stops in the final period of action. He improved to 13-2-1 in net and helped the Bulldogs reach the Harris Cup Final for the fifth year in a row.
Adrian (20-5-1) got going midway through the first period and built a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Freshman forward Shelby Gray scored his 12th goal of the season on the power play with assists from Josh Cousineau and Zach Graham. Gray's patented hard slapshot handcuffed Lawrence goaltender Peter Emery to stake AC to a 1-0 lead at 12:57.
The Bulldogs tacked on another goal at 15:00 at even strength as Graham found the back of the twine for the 15th time this season from a shot between the circles. Justin Basso and Jordan Watts had the assists for Adrian.
In the second period, Adrian's Josh Ranalli took a five-minute major for charging and Lawrence capitalized to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Brad Scurfield notched his 13th goal of the season with Jameson Raymond and Matt Hughes getting assists on the goal.
The third period was all Lawrence as they outshot the Bulldogs, 13-2, in the period. Shackell made every save as Lawrence was 0-for-1 on the power play in the third. For the game, LU went 1-for-5 while Adrian was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Adrian eliminated Lawrence in the semifinals for the third straight season and now is 13-0 all time against the Vikings. Adrian will await the winner of the second semifinal beginning at 6:00 PM which pits #2 seed Marian against #3 seed Milwaukee School of Engineering.
