ADRIAN, Mich. – The No. 4 Adrian College men's hockey team (8-0, 7-0) kept their record perfect by defeating Concordia (4-6, 4-3), 5-2, in a game between the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Southern Division's top two teams Friday.
The MCHA Freshmen of the Week, Shaquille Merasty, was in on all but one Adrian goal, netting four points on the night including two power-play goals.
In the first period, the Bulldogs scored twice in the final four minutes to take a 2-0 intermission lead. Ryan Lowe got his third of the season from Zach Wilson and Andrew Dovey for a 1-0 lead. Then, Merasty got his first of the night on the power play with assists to Zach Graham and Shelby Gray.
Merasty would score the eventual game-winner in the third period on the power play about three minutes into the third period. Ryan Gieseler and Josh Cousineau assisted on Merasty's team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Cousineau would get his second goal of the season with about six minutes left in the game to stake the Bulldogs to a comfortable 4-0 lead, but just over a minute later Concordia would get their first goal of the night to draw within three.
Both teams would exchange goals in the game's final minute for the 5-2 final. First, Adrian's Gray would net his fifth of the year on the power play from Justin Basso and Merasty. Then the Falcons would add a power-play goal of their own with just eight seconds left on the clock.
On the night Adrian's goaltending made 26 saves to Concordia's 23, as James Hamby improved his record in the net to 4-0.
The Bulldogs went 3-for-9 with the man advantage, while the Falcons were 1-for-6.
These same two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Arrington Ice Arena.
