ASHLAND, Wis. – The men's hockey team opened the season and made its NCHA debut on Friday with a 6-2 win at Northland. Both teams were members of the former MCHA and thus have faced one another several times with the Bulldogs having never lost to the LumberJacks (15-0).
The newest members of the Bulldog hockey team made their presence known in the first period. Michael Hoy scored the season's first goal at 8:42 with Justin Basso earning an assist. Brett Pinkerton added to the lead at 19:42 on the power play with Jeremy Olinyk and Ryan Gieseler each assisting on the goal. Adrian held a 17-5 edge in shots during the first period.
Josh Ranalli scored 39 seconds into the second period with Austin Hervey and Josh Cousineau helping on Adrian's third goal. Kevin Balas scored at 11:24 from Chris Leone to make it 4-0 after two periods.
Ranalli notched a power play goal at 1:08 of the third with Ryan Lowe and Shelby Gray assisting on his second of the night. Duston Hebebrand added Adrian's sixth goal just 19 seconds later from Pinkerton. Anthony Stempin on the power play (13:24) and Mike Lennon (13:34) scored late in the contest.
Adrian outshot the LumberJacks, 45-26, and had double digit shots in all three periods. The Bulldogs finished 2-of-4 on the power play with five shots. Northland finished 1-of-3 on the power play with four shots. Scott Shackell stopped 24 shots in earning the win in net. Hebebrand had a great night in the faceoff circle winning 14-of-20 draws. The two teams will skate again tomorrow to conclude the series.
