FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The men's hockey team was 43 seconds away from their tenth victory of the season on Friday night. However, the Marian University Sabres pulled their goaltender and used that extra attacker to tie the game 2-2 and send the game into overtime. Neither team could score in the extra five-minute session and the game ended in a tie. It was the first tie in 18 meetings between Adrian and Marian and ended Adrian's nine-game winning streak to start the season. AC is now 9-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the NCHA. MU is now 4-7-1 and 3-3-1 in the NCHA.
The NCHA Featured Series of the weekend lived up to its billing as both teams were evenly matched throughout. For just the second time this season, the Bulldogs were outshot 27-26 with each team taking one shot on net in overtime. The Sabres had the best chance to break the tie in overtime as they had one-minute worth of power play time after junior Justin Basso took a tripping penalty in Adrian's offensive zone. Both teams failed to score on the power play as Adrian went 0-for-7 breaking a five-game stretch with at least one power play goal. Marian finished 0-for-5 as the Bulldogs have killed off 11 straight penalties in their last two games.
The teams went scoreless in the first period and Adrian opened the scoring at 2:38 of the second as Brett Pinkerton scored from the right circle with assists from Duston Hebebrand and Ryan Lowe. Adrian took a 1-0 lead into the third before the Sabres tied it 1-1 at 6:00. Robbie Bailey got the goal from Aaron Leonard and Matt Berger. Adrian freshman forward Austin Hervey gave his team a 2-1 lead at 7:45 of the third with an assist from fellow freshman Jeremy Olinyk and junior Shelby Gray. The Sabres equalizer in the third came from Derek Perl with Matt Williams credited with an assist. Williams won a faceoff in the right circle back to Perl whose slapshot got past James Hamby.
Hamby made 25 saves for the Bulldogs moving to 26-3-2 in his career in net. Josh Baker got the start for Marian and played 47:45 making 19 saves. Baker took a 10-minute misconduct penalty right after the Hervey goal forcing Mike Baldwin into the fire. Baldwin stopped all four shots taken and the Sabres also emptied their net for 27 seconds. Adrian is now 15-2-1 in the series and will face Marian again tomorrow at 5 p.m. eastern.
