SAINT PETER, Minn. – One night after a scare from St. Olaf which resulted in a tie, the Adrian College men's hockey team played a very steady game defensively in a 2-0 win at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday from Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties entered the game tied for the third longest active unbeaten streak in NCAA Division III at eight games before Adrian's defense put a stop to that streak. Gustavus Adolphus is now 7-4-3 overall while the Bulldogs improved to 13-0-2 overall. The Bulldogs' 15-game unbeaten streak to start a season is best start in Adrian history and they also ran their road unbeaten streak to 28 games.
The Bulldogs recorded their fourth shutout of the season and their two goals tied for a season-low, but the goaltending of junior Scott Shackell made those goals stand up. Shackell improved to 5-0 in net this season and made a season-high 33 saves. In addition, it was Shackell's second shutout this season and the fifth of his career.
Adrian and Gustavus played to a scoreless first period with the Bulldogs holding a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. Senior Josh Cousineau scored the game's first goal at the 5:15 mark of the second period. Cousineau's power play goal was the second in as many games and was assisted by Josh Ranalli and Ryan Lowe. Cousineau scored his third career game-winning goal, 12th career power play goal and 31st career goal.
Junior Kevin Balas gave the Bulldogs a little breathing room in the third period at 3:41 on a 4-on-4 situation with his third goal of the season and 15th of his career. Balas' goal was assisted by Justin Basso and Michael Hoy. Gustavus outshot Adrian, 16-9, in the third period and ended the game with a 33-29 edge. Adrian's penalty kill prevented all six attempts by the Gusties matching a season-high for the third time this season that the opponent went 0-for-6 (Concordia, Wis. on Nov. 15 and Nazareth on Dec. 1). The Bulldogs finished 1-for-5 on the power play scoring a power play goal for the fourth straight game. It was also the 13th time in 15 games this season with a power play goal.
