ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's hockey team improved to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in the NCHA with a 5-3 win over visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering to complete the weekend sweep of the Raiders at Arrington Ice Arena. The Bulldogs build a 3-0 lead midway through the second period, but had to hold on including an empty-net goal with 36 seconds left.
Senior Micki Mihailovich got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard at 5:34 of the first period with assists from Kevin Balas and Jeremy Olinyk. Mihailovich crashed the net to score on a feed from Balas. Senior Josh Ranalli made it 2-0 at 9:24 from Duston Hebebrand and Ryan Lowe. He fired a shot low just under the pads of MSOE goalminder Austin Campbell.
Freshman Mathew Thompson made it 3-0 at 13:07 of the second period with an assist from Taylor McCloy. He took a sharp angle shot between the left circle and goal line to beat Campbell above the shoulder for his second goal of the season. The Raiders stormed back with two goals just minutes apart. Dylan Dailey scored at 19:57 of the second and Gage Christianson scored at 1:41 of the third to cut the lead to 3-2.
Junior Chris Leone scored the game-winner at 15:50 of the third on a slap shot from the left point with McCloy and Kyle Brothers getting an assist. Omar Mullen notched a power play goal at 16:53 for his third goal of the weekend to cut it to 4-3. Mullen re-directed a shot from Zach Simpson at the right point. Adrian took a penalty with 1:46 to play giving the Raiders a golden opportunity to tie the game. MSOE made the choice to pull Campbell from the net and seconds later it was senior Rob Heath who scored into the empty net from his own blue line with 36 seconds to go with an assist from Ryan Gieseler.
Scott Shackell got the start in net and made 21 saves including 17 in the final two periods. Campbell stopped 21 shots as well including 16 in the first two periods. Adrian went 0-of-2 on the power play with both chances coming in the first period.
