EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The men's hockey team began a big weekend road trip to Wisconsin with a quality non-conference win at ninth-ranked UW-Eau Claire in front of a packed house at Hobbs Ice Center. The fifth-ranked Bulldogs improved to 7-0 and 3-0 away from home with their program's first win over the Blugolds in three tries. It was the first meeting between the schools in Eau Claire after Adrian dropped a pair of one-goal games in 2010 and 2011 at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Bulldogs played a strong first period with an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Adrian took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as Grant Telfer scored his second of the season at 4:34 from Chris Leone.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead at 1:04 of the second period as Kyle Brothers netted his sixth of the season with an assist from Mathew Thompson. UWEC cut the lead to 2-1 at 2:20 as Ethan Nauman scored his fifth of the season. A busy second period continued at 6:10 as Adrian took a 3-1 lead off the stick of Thompson with an assist from Taylor McCloy. The Blugolds made it 3-2 after two periods at 17:18 as Todd Koritzinsky got his first of the season.
Adrian went 0-for-1 on the power play in the first two periods but used a five-minute major checking from behind by Preston Hodge and a game misconduct to put the game away. The teams skated 4-on-4 as Brett Pinkerton also took a two-minute minor for roughing at 14:58. The three minutes with the man advantage yielded a pair of goals for a 5-2 final. Brothers got his second of the game and seventh of the season from McCloy at 17:52 and then 36 seconds later it was Josh Ranalli scoring his sixth of the season from Thompson and Duston Hebebrand.
Scott Shackell picked up the win between the pipes for Adrian making 27 saves including all 11 shots he faced in the critical third period. Jay Deo stopped 30 shots for UW-Eau Claire with 10 coming in each period. The Bulldogs travel to sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point tomorrow night for an 8 p.m. eastern puck drop against the Pointers (5-1).
