Bulldogs Drop First of Season to UWSP

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College men's hockey team suffered its first loss of the season (8-1) on Saturday (Nov. 29) against visiting UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers sought a bit of revenge after Adrian claimed a 6-4 win last Saturday in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The Bulldogs trailed throughout the contest and faced an uphill battle against the No. 9 Pointers (6-2).

Kevin Gibson and Garrett Ladd gave the Pointers a 2-0 lead in the first period scoring just 40 seconds apart which put Adrian in a tough spot. Gibson scored on the power play at 7:05 on a rebound off the boards for his second of the season and then Ladd beat Adrian goaltender James Hamby past the blocker inside the left post for his third of the season.

Freshman Mathew Thompson was a bright spot for the Bulldogs as he notched his first career hat trick to up his season total to eight. He cut the lead to 2-1 at 17:03 of the first on the power play from Duston Hebebrand and Josh Ranalli on a 5-on-3 opportunity.

There was just one goal scored in the second period and it was a back-breaker for the Bulldogs. Alex Brooks took a shot at 19:31 and found the five-hole on Hamby to make it 3-1 after two periods.

Adrian came out in the third and quickly cut the lead to 3-2 just 40 seconds into the final period. Thompson buried the puck on a rebound after a Chris Leone shot hit the crossbar. Moments later momentum swung back to UW-Stevens Point as Joe Kalisz scored a nifty wrap-around goal for his fifth of the season at 1:06 to re-establish a two-goal lead.

Kyle Sharkey added an empty-net goal at 18:18 for a 5-2 lead. Thompson's third goal of the night came at 19:53 from Kyle Brothers. Adrian kept Hamby on the bench and Evan Dixon added the final goal with one second left.

Hamby made 26 saves including 10 in the third period falling to 2-1 in net this season. Brandon Jaeger stopped 24 shots including 10 in the first period to improve to 6-2 in net. Adrian went 1-for-7 on the power play with five shots on goal.
