DULUTH, Minn. – The Adrian College men's hockey team had posted three ties already this month but left little doubt about the outcome on Saturday with a 3-0 win at St. Scholastica. The two teams played to a 2-2 tie last evening, but the goaltending of senior Scott Shackell gave Adrian their 12th win of the season and improved them to 9-0-1 in the NCHA. Shackell stopped all 27 shots he faced including a dozen in a first period that saw Adrian get outshot 12-3. He made four saves in the second period and with Adrian clinging to a 1-0 lead after two periods, made 11 more in the third. Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play in the contest.
The Saints had back-to-back power plays in the second period as Michael Hoy (5:21) and Adam Davies (7:39) both went to the box. Adrian had one crack on the power play in the second after a minor to Joel Paiement (9:53). Freshman Kyle Brothers uncorked a shot at 1:49 of the second period to put the Bulldogs on the board with his 13th goal.
Adrian misfired on two chances with the man advantage in the third as Keegan Bruce (3:16) and the bench took a too many men on the ice penalty (12:54). Senior Ryan Lowe scored his fourth goal of the season and 17th of his career at 9:24 of the third for a 2-0 lead. Davies and Brett Pinkerton each recorded an assist. Junior Pat George scored his first career goal in his 32nd game with an empty-netter at 19:12 with an assist from Mathew Thompson. The Bulldogs are back to action next weekend on Jan. 23 and 24 at Finlandia University.
