APPLETON, Wis. – After an emotional and physical series against St. Norbert last weekend, the men's hockey team traveled to Lawrence on Friday night and won 6-1. The Bulldogs (16-3-3, 13-1-1 NCHA) showed no signs of a letdown on the road and inched closer to the NCHA regular season title after Lake Forest (2-1 at MSOE) and St. Norbert (3-1 vs CSS) both lost this evening. Adrian sits atop the conference standings with 27 points while the Foresters are second with 23 points. There are just three regular season games remaining meaning Adrian could clinch tomorrow with a win over Lawrence and a tie or loss by Lake Forest.
Freshman forward Mathew Thompson recorded a hat trick with all three goals via the power play and added an assist. It was the second hat trick of the season for Thompson who also did it against UW-Stevens Point on November 29. Jeremy Olinyk tacked on two goals including a short-handed tally. Josh Ranalli contributed a goal and two assists. Ryan Gieseler set a career-high with four assists. Kyle Brothers chipped in a pair of assists.
Senior goaltender Scott Shackell lost a shutout bid in the third period, but made 21 saves improving to 12-1-3 this season. The sixth-ranked Bulldogs outshot the Vikings, 38-22, and were 3-for-6 on the power play. Lawrence went 0-for-4 on the power play and allowed a short-handed goal.
Adrian built a 5-0 lead midway through the third period before an even strength goal by Sean Reynolds assisted by Renato Engler and Brandon Boelter. Thompson scored the first two goals for Adrian at 5:04 of the first and 4:19 of the second. Olinyk scored short-handed at 17:30 of the second and 10:35 of the third.
