ADRIAN, Mich.--For the second consecutive week, the Adrian College men's hockey team occupies the top spot in the Minneapolis-based U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) poll with 298 points. The Bulldogs gained eight more first-place votes for a total of 18 from a panel of panel of coaches and hockey writers from across the country. In addition, Bloomington, Minn.-based D3hockey.com has Adrian jumping two spots to No. 1 in its national rankings for the first time since the first three weeks of 2017-18, earning 13 first-place votes among 293 points according to a vote of Sports Information Directors and media members nationwide.
The Bulldogs have been playing well on both ends of the ice during their season-long winning streak of nine games (the best since 11 wins in a row during the 2015-16 campaign), which is the currently the nation's second-best unbeaten streak behind No. 6/9 University of New England (14-0-1). Since Dec. 29, Adrian is outscoring the opposition 39-11 during the last nine contests. And during that stretch, the AC penalty-kill unit has successfully terminated 34 of 39 opponent power play opportunities for 87.2 percent.
After sweeping a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association weekend at home against previous D3hockey No. 1 St. Norbert (3-2 in overtime) and Finlandia (7-1), Adrian holds a four-point lead with four games remaining in the race for home-ice in the Harris Cup Playoffs.
Adrian owns a 17-4 overall record and 13-1 NCHA-South Division ledger going into its trip to Illinois this weekend when it plays at Lake Forest (Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern) and Aurora (Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern). On the season, the 'Dogs lead Division III with 17 victories, rank second in winning percentage (.810), second in scoring margin (+2.62 goals per game), third in scoring defense (1.71 gpg), fifth in scoring offense (4.33 gpg) and 10th in penalty-killing (.876; 85/97).
Senior captain Mathew Thompson (22 points) and senior assistant captain Taylor McCloy (21) share the team lead with 12 goals. Junior defenseman Cory Dunn paces the squad with 23 points on three goals and 20 assists. The goaltending tandem of senior Dillon Kelley and junior Kevin Entmaa is among the nation's best. Kelley has a career-best 6-1 record with a nation-leading 1.24 goals-against average and second-ranked .945 save percentage, while Entmaa is 10-2, 1.74 GAA (9th in NCAA III) and .937 save percentage (6th in NCAA III).
