Fourteen Bulldogs Land on 2018 Academic All-NCHA Team

DULUTH, Minn.--The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Wednesday released the 2017-18 NCHA Men's All-Academic Team, as the Peters Cup champion Adrian College Bulldogs had 14 representatives--four more than last season and double the amount in 2014-15. 

Highlighting the way, 18 student-athletes across the conference are earning the academic distinction for the third time in their careers, reaching the normal maximum (players need to sophomores to be considered)--and Adrian seniors Blake Butzow and Austin Rust are on that prestigious list. 

A player must be at least sophomore status to earn the all-academic award, as well as have an overall grade-point average above 3.00.

Here's a season synopsis of each Bulldog honoree:

Blake Butzow #, Senior, LD, Plymouth, Mich. / Cowichan Valley Capitals (BCHL)...second season as an alternate scoring totals of 2 goals, 20 assists and 22 total points in 88 to eight games this season due to rating...three-time Academic All-NCHA...a business management major.

Austin Rust #, Senior, RW, Algonac, Mich. / Kirkland Lake Gold Miners (GOJHL)...having a career year with eight goals, 13 points, 46 shots on goal and a plus-11 scoring totals of 15+19=34 in 69 contests...three-time Academic All-NCHA...made Team of the Week debut on Nov. 8...majoring in exercise science (pre-professional).

Ryan Cusin, Sophomore, RW, Westland, Mich. / Aston Rebels (NAHL)...Has 9+14=23 career scoring totals for seventh on the team in points--his first season in an Adrian uniform after playing the 2016-17 campaign at scoring totals of 25+38=63 in 50 appearances...the NCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Feb. major.

Cory Dunn, Junior, D, Trenton, Mich. / Austin Bruins (NAHL)...a three-time Team of the Week selection this season (Nov. 15, Dec. 5, Jan. 30)...28 points ranks tied for fourth on the squad...leads NCAA Division III blueliners with 25 assists...bidding for a third year named a AHCA coaches' All-American...majoring in finance, with a minor in economics.

Kevin Entmaa, Junior, G, Milton, Ontario / Caledonia Corvairs (GOJHL)...Selected to the Team of the Week on Jan. 30...owns a 15-2 record in goal, tying his career high for wins in a season...also among nation's leaders in goals-against average (1.82) and save percentage (.933) management major and marketing minor.

Nick Erb *, Junior, RW, London, Ontario / Aurora Tigers (OJHL)...Was a member of the conference's all-academic team while playing for fellow NCHA foe Concordia-Wisconsin in 2016-17...has chipped in two goals and two assists in 17 games in first season with the scoring totals of 14+19=33 in 68 major...economics minor. 

Braden Hellems *, Junior, RD, St. Thomas, Ontario / Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL)...another Bulldog who is having a career year with scoring totals of 4+16=20, ranking fourth on the team in assists and eight in points...also has career highs in plus/minus rating (+22) and shots on goal (89)...has twice as many shots than he did in his previous two seasons (40 combined)...majoring in criminal justice, with a minor in business administration.

Bud Madej, Sophomore, D, New Lenox, Ill. / Lone Star Brahmas (NAHL) far this season, has posted career bests with 35 shots and a plus-12...chipped in two assists in 23 games played, a personal record for appearances...majoring in business management.

Chase Matson *, Junior, LW/C, Livonia, Mich. / Soo Eagles (NAHL)...a senior academically and plans to graduate in three years...has contributed four assists among five points, a plus-3 and 17 47 career games, has 5+17=22 scoring totals...pursuing a degree in business management.

Matt McNair, Sophomore, F, Beiseker, Alberta / Okotoks Oilers (AJHL)...set a personal record with 10 assists and tied his PR with 12 points so far this rating also is a career high...had three assists in a victory at Finlandia...majoring in business.

Vincent Paquette, Sophomore, F, Calgary, Alberta / Calgary Mustangs (AJHL)...Seven assists in 19 contests...30 shots on goal and plus-4...a business major.

Vinny Post, Sophomore, RW, Clarkston, Mich. / Carlton Place Canadiens (CCHL)...season totals of five assists, six points, plus-8 rating and 23 shots on goal...studying marketing.

Mathew Thompson, Senior, C, Bolton, Ontario / Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL)...Named to the Team of the Week on Jan. 9...two-year team captain...currently ranks third on the team with 29 points on 14 goals and 15 assists...61 shots...a plus-16 scoring totals of 59+64=123 in 102 games...a sports management major and economics minor.

Bryan Yim *, Junior, F, RW/C, Farmington, Mich. / New Jersey Hitmen (USPHL)...season totals so far include eight goals, 10 assists and 18 total points in 26 games played, plus 63 shots and a plus-11 rating...averaging almost a point a game for his career (80 points in 83 contests)...physics major and mathematics minor.

Top-ranked Adrian has won 15 games in a row to improve to 23-4 overall, won the NCHA regular season crown for the fourth year in a row with a 17-1 league slate, and is hosting Lake Forest College in the Harris Cup Semifinals on Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
