ADRIAN, Mich.--Freshman Grant Baetsen scored an unassisted goal 23 seconds into the sudden-victory overtime period to lift the Gold past the Black in the annual Adrian College men's hockey intrasquad game at Arrington Ice Arena on Thursday evening.
Baetsen picked up a loose puck at his offensive blue line and wristed a shot top-shelf over the goalie's left shoulder.
With the goalie pulled in favor of a sixth attacker, the black squad forced the 5-minute extra session on a shot from the blue line by junior defenseman Joey Colatarci. Assists were credited to senior center Connor Armour and freshman defenseman Matt Eller on Colatarci's game-tying goal with 2 minutes and 26 seconds to go in regulation.
Senior Kevin Entmaa and freshman Tymen Edelkoort shared time in the Gold net as the former made all 18 stops he faced in the first 34 minutes while the latter had five saves in the final 26:23; Edelkoort picked up the win. Sophomore Nikita Babintsev made 19 saves in the defeat for the Black.
Black outshot Gold by a 24 to 21 count. Baetsen's goal was the only shot in the overtime.
Black dominated the Gold in the face-off circle, led by freshman William Brochu who won 11 of 13 draws. Armour finished 11-6 at the dot.
The Bulldogs open the 2018-19 campaign on the road later this month when they travel to Utica, N.Y., for a two-game non-conference series against the Utica Pioneers on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27 (7 and 5 p.m.).
