BLOOMINGTON, Minn.--Adrian College senior defenseman Braden Hellems (St. Thomas, Ontario/Trenton Golden Hawks, OJHL) makes his debut selection to the D3hockey.com Team of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. This week's edition encompasses the award week from Monday, Nov. 12 to Sunday, Nov. 18, and this signals the third time in four weeks that a Bulldog blueliner has been named the D3hockey TOW.
Hellems was one of two student-athletes out of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (Northland's Max Glashauser was the other) picked by the editors to represent the nation on the blueline. He tied for the team lead among defensemen with eight shots on goal during Adrian's home-and-home sweep over Trine, 5-0 Friday in Adrian and 7-5 Saturday in Angola, Ind. The Bulldogs stormed back from a 4-1 deficit with six goals in the third period. He one-timed a slap shot from above the circles that proved to be the game-winner with 4 minutes and 28 seconds to go, capping a run of four goals in 4:07 as Adrian went up 6-4 at the time. He also helped the Bulldogs on special teams as the power play went 7-for-15 (.467) and the penalty kill was 10-for-11 (.909) against the Thunder.
On the season, Hellems has two goals and four assists for six points in seven contests--ranked second offensively among Adrian defensemen.
Adrian (7-1 overall, 5-1 NCHA-South Division) will compete at the prestigious PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout in Northfield, Vt., during Thanksgiving weekend. The Bulldogs take on host Norwich at 7 p.m. Friday and then the Middlebury/Plattsburgh winner at 4 or 7 p.m. Saturday.
