Men's Hockey Drops 6-4 Decision to Visiting SUNY Canton to Close 2018

ADRIAN, Mich.--Adam Petric registered a hat trick and Michael Cerasuolo posted 47 saves to help power SUNY Canton to a 6-4 upset of nationally-ranked Adrian College in non-conference men's hockey action on Sunday to close the 2018 calendar year.

= Records: Adrian Bulldogs 10-4-1 overall (5-2-1 NCHA South Division), SUNY Canton Kangaroos 5-6-2 overall

= National Rankings: Adrian--#3 United States College Hockey Online (234 points) and #3 (255) polls

= Senior Nick Erb and freshman Michael Montambault led Adrian with a goal and assist each. The latter added eight face-off wins in 14 draws.

= Junior Vinny Post contributed two assists and a plus-3.

= Seniors Connor Armour (14-for-19) and Bryan Yim (13-for-19) led Adrian's strong presence in the face-off department. 

= Petric finished with six shots on goal to tie for game-high honors.

= Joe Deveny and newcomer Tyson Bruce added a goal and assist apiece.

= Tyler Bullard won nine of 18 face-offs and notched an assist.

= The Kangaroos, who were outshot 51 to 19, never trailed this afternoon. They jumped ahead 1-0 on Deveny's power play goal 9 minutes and 8 seconds into the first period.

= Just 2:35 later, Adrian equalized on a rebound goal near the left post by senior captain Cory Dunn off Montambault's shot from between the circles.

= In the second period, Canton held leads of 2-1 and 4-2. Petric scored his first goal at the 2:28 mark to give the 'Roos a one-goal lead before Erb notched his first marker of the season to tie it 2-2 1:10 later. Bruce and Sean Shepard scored unassisted goals about 10 minutes apart to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage after 40 minutes.

= Adrian opened the scoring in the third period just 62 seconds in when senior Trevor Boyd scored a short-handed goal on a feed from junior defenseman Niko Coffman, closing the deficit to 4-3.

= But Petric restored Canton's two-goal lead 1:10 later with his second goal, assisted by Bullard.

= The Bulldogs got within 5-4 off the stick of Montambault at the 6:36 mark. Erb passed the puck to Post behind the net, who then found Montambault at the top of the crease where he beat the goaltender inside the right post. 

= Adrian kept the offensive pressure on Canton after getting within one, getting off 31 shots that were on goal, wide or blocked over the final 13 minutes. With 2:04 remaining, the Bulldogs pulled the goalie in favor of an extra attacker and had two official shots on goal, but could not get the tying goal to force an overtime period.

= The Bulldogs hit the pipe on four shots.

= Petric wrapped up the scoring with an empty-net goal, unassisted, with 5 seconds left to ice the victory.

= Canton is part of the State University of New York educational system and its athletics program plays an Independent schedule.

= This marked the first meeting between the programs.

= Boyd appeared in his 100th career game for the Bulldogs. He is the team's active all-time leader with 60 goals and has 47 assists.

= This was Petric's first collegiate hat trick and Cerasuolo's 47 stops were a career high.

= Dunn leads Adrian in scoring with 18 points on five goals and 13 assists. On the school's all-time list, he tied Josh Cousineau (36+79=115, 2010-13) for 13th place with 115 points (23+92).

= Freshman Rex Moe, who joined Adrian as a midseason addition during the holidays, had four shots on goal in his collegiate debut.

= This was Canton's highest ranked win in school history. 

= Adrian's first game of 2019 is Tuesday, Jan. 8, against the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USNTDP) Under-18 squad in Plymouth. The opening face-off for the exhibition contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. in USA Hockey Arena.
