GLOUCESTER, Mass.--The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) has released its third annual AHCA Krampade Division III All-America Scholar listings, and the Adrian College men's hockey team had six student-athletes honored.
The national coaches' organization once again recognizes varsity ice hockey players who attained a 3.6 grade-point average each semester and participated in 40 percent of their school's games during the 2018-19 season as "Krampade All American Scholars." A small number of waivers to the 40 percent participation requirement was granted due to injury or for back-up goaltenders.
"The list of honorees represents the best of the NCAA, student-athletes who excel on and off the ice," said AHCA executive director Joe Bertagna. "The sport demands a great deal from these athletes so it is a great statement they make, individually and collectively, with their ability to attain this level of academic achievement."
Graduated senior Braden Hellems (St. Thomas, Ontario/Trenton Golden Hawks, OJHL) led the way for the Bulldogs as he was singled out by the AHCA as one of only six NCAA Division III student-athletes who earned both AHCA/CCM All-America status and Krampade All-American Scholar recognition. Hellems also is a repeat Krampade All-American Scholar from his 2017-18 junior campaign and the only representative out of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. Last summer, the blueliner who studied criminal justice became just the second AC men's hockey player ever named to the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America® NCAA Division III Men's At-Large Third Team.
Hellems was joined by fellow graduated senior Brian Bachnak (communication major), a forward from Brownstown, Mich./Austin Bruins, NAHL; junior defenseman Niko Coffman (accounting) from Chelsea, Mich./Bowling Green, NCAA D-I, WCHA; junior forward Bryce Van Horn (biochemistry) from Port Huron, Mich./Colorado College (NCAA D-I, NCHC); and freshmen defensemen Matt Eller (exercise science), Brandon Marinelli (criminal justice) from Ypsilanti, Mich. (Austin Bruins, NAHL) and Toronto, Ontario (Nanaimo Clippers, BCHL), respectively.
Adrian debuted with a school-best eight honorees for the 2017-18 academic year and now have 14 Krampade All-American Scholars who have been cited for this national award.
