Men's Hockey Doubles Up on Trine in NCAA Exhibition Contest, 7-3

ADRIAN, Mich.--Sophomore Rex Moe scored twice in the first period to help the Adrian College men's hockey team to a 7-3 exhibition victory Saturday over visiting Trine at Arrington Ice Arena.

THE BASICS

TOP 'DAWGS
= Sophomore Austin Bottrell chipped in three points with a goal and two assists.

= Seniors Dino Balsamo (1g, 1a), Matt McNair (1g, 1a) and Vincent Paquette (2a) also had multi-point games.

= Goalies junior Cameron Gray and freshman Nic Tallarico recorded 13 and eight saves, respectively.

THE OPPOSITION
= Carmine Taffo led the Thunder with a goal and an assist.

= Goalies Brett Young made 20 saves in the first 40 minutes of action while Aaron Brickman had 13 stops over the last 20 minutes.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Trine took a 1-0 lead 11 minutes and 44 seconds into the opening period on a goal by Austin Stauffer with assists from Aryan Batra and Taffo.

= Moe scored the first of his two goals on the day just a minute later with Adrian on the power play. Paquette and freshman Alessio Luciani assisted on the play.

= Then 3:37 later, Moe potted his second tally on a feed from junior defenseman Joshua Owings as the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

= Bottrell made it 3-1 in the Bulldogs' favor just 71 seconds into the second period. Senior defenseman Bud Madej assisted on the quick-scoring play.

= William Casey pulled Trine within 3-2 at the 7:47 mark. He was assisted by Justin Meers.

= The Bulldogs, however, rebuilt their two-goal advantage, 4-2, with only 12 seconds left in the stanza as sophomore defenseman Matt Eller found classmate Michael Montambault for the goal.

= Adrian took control of the game in the third period when it outscored the Thunder 3-1 thanks to a 17-7 shots on goal advantage.

= McNair staked AC to a 5-2 advantage on assists from Bottrell and Balsamo. 

= After Taffo scored the Thunder's last goal via a Chris Garrity pass at 4:31, the Bulldogs iced the win with goals from sophomore Sam Ruffin (9:19) and Balsamo (15:23).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The Bulldogs outshot the visitors 41 to 24 on the day.

= Fans can catch another glimpse of game-action from the Bulldogs on Sunday, Oct. 27, when Adrian will conduct a Black and Gold intrasquad scrimmage starting at 4:05 p.m.

= Per NCAA rules, exhibition games will not count toward the teams' record or statistics.

= Bulldog blueliners accounted for three assists this afternoon. Underclassmen compiled nine total points.

= Ruffin, who is out of Westfield, Ind., is a NCAA Division I transfer from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

UP NEXT
= Adrian officially opens the 2019-20 season on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2, in Buffalo, N.Y., for the Buffalo State College Tournament. The Bulldogs will open against Nichols at 3:30 p.m. Friday and play either host Buffalo State or Manhattanville on Saturday at 3:30 or 7 p.m.
