Bulldogs Win a Wild One Over Aurora

Bulldogs Win a Wild One Over Aurora

ADRIAN, Mich. - Aurora failed to make it an easy win for Adrian but the Bulldogs saved two shots in the final 12 seconds to preserve an 8-7 win in front of a home crowd. Sophomore goalie Kevin Lerg saved the two shots as the Bulldogs had two players in the penalty box, but the defense was able to stand its ground as Adrian took home the victory.

The game started out back and forth, with Aurora scoring a goal and Adrian coming back to tie for most of the first half. John Hudzinski scored two of his four goals in the half, as Cody Kilcoyne added a goal with 1:16 left to send the teams into halftime tied at four.

There was not much in the way of scoring in the third period, as Aurora scored the only goal in the period and went into the fourth with a 5-4 lead. The Bulldogs made a stand in the fourth however, as Hudzinski scored the first two goals of the period, giving Adrian its first lead of the game with 11:30 left in the game.

Aurora then added a goal to tie the game, but senior T.J. Cook had the answer, as Scott Krystiniak found Cook to give the Bulldogs the lead once again at 7-6.

Penalties then almost cost the Bulldogs, as Aurora was able to score a man up goal and tie the game at seven a-piece with 3:54 left. Not to be out-done, Cody Kilcoyne added an unassisted goal with 1:34 left that gave Adrian the 8-7 victory.

Aurora had a chance with under a minute left, and having the ball in its possession. The Bulldogs were called for two penalties, as Matt Hamilton and Nicholas Frontczak were forced to go to the sidelines with 12 seconds remaining in the game, and a one goal lead for Adrian. Lerg came up huge however, stopping both shots in the final seconds as the Bulldogs ran on the field in celebration of the win.

Kilcoyne finished the game with two goals, while grabbing six groundballs. Cook finished the game with two goals and two assists.

Lerg ended the victory with 10 saves, with the two at the end being the most vital for the Adrian win. Adrian out-shot Aurora 40-24 for the game, with the Bulldogs also winning 15-of-19 faceoffs.

With the loss, Aurora drops to 7-3 (3-1 MLC) on the season, while Adrian improves its record to 9-1 (5-0 MLC).

The Bulldogs will travel to Kenyon this upcoming Wednesday, as they will face off with the 7-2 Lords at 4:00 pm.
