ADRIAN, Mich. - Senior Mitch Burgin picked a great time to turn on the offense as he scored the game's final three goals in a span of 1:01 as the men's lacrosse team won 14-11 over Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon. Burgin scored the only man-up goal of the contest with 3:24 left on a feed from A.J. Smith to give Adrian a 12-11 lead. It was their first lead since 1-0 just 1:01 into the contest. Burgin scored again with 2:38 left from Nick Karapas and sealed the win 15 seconds later from Smith again.
Adrian trailed 7-2 after one quarter as Wittenberg closed the quarter with four straight goals. The Bulldogs rallied in the second quarter with five straight goals to tie it 7-7 with 8:53 left until halftime. Wittenberg scored three of the next four goals to lead 10-8 at the break.
The second half featured far fewer scoring chances as each team scored just one goal in the third. Brett Maguire scored with 3:56 left from Eric Fannell and Adrian trailed 11-9 after 45 minutes. The Bulldogs pulled away in the fourth and scored the game's final six goals. Adam Findlay started the fourth with a goal at the 9:23 mark and Fannell added the tying goal with 4:33 left unassisted.
Fannell was back after missing the first two games of the season and finished with two goals and three assists. Karapas tallied a goal and four assists while attempting eight shots. Smith finished with a goal and two assists and won two face-offs. Scott Byrne and Cody Schmitt each won six face-offs and Schmitt finished with three ground balls. Burgin scored his four goals on six shot attempts. Brett Farrelly made nine saves in the victory for the Bulldogs. Adrian went 1-for-7 and Wittenberg went 0-for-5 in man-up opportunities.
