ADRIAN, Mich. – The men's lacrosse team got a battle for three quarters from Olivet College on Saturday afternoon, but a strong fourth quarter saw Adrian pull away with a 16-8 win. The Bulldogs improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA while the Comets slip to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Adrian jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter as Eric Fannell scored three times increasing his season total to 31 goals. The Comets scored the next two goals to cut the lead to 4-3 as James Collins netted both for Olivet. Adrian led 5-3 after the first quarter and each team scored twice in the second quarter for a 7-5 Adrian lead at intermission.
The Bulldogs scored three of the first four goals in the third quarter to build a 10-6 lead with 4:50 left in the third. A.J. Smith, Max Groves and Doug Boyd scored for the Bulldogs including Groves' first goal of the season. Olivet got goals from Tyler Polendo and Nino Minaudo to cut the lead to 10-8 with 3:38 left in the third. Adrian would then close out the game with the final six goals for a 16-8 win.
Adam Findlay led the team with five goals on six shots on goal. Fannell and Boyd each scored three times for the Bulldogs. Jake Waldrup scored his first goal of the season and also had an assist. Adrian attempted 38 total shots including 24 shots on goal. Scott Byrne registered eight ground balls and won 16-of-26 in the faceoff circle. Mitch Burgin finished with a goal and three assists. Nick Karapas had three assists and six ground balls. Brett Farrelly made nine saves in net for Adrian.
