ADRIAN, Mich. – It was the regular season finale on Wednesday night for the men's lacrosse team as four seniors played in their final encounter in a 14-9 win over Trine University. Mitch Burgin, A.J. Smith, Brandon Parnham and Scott Byrne entered the game with a 53-14 record and have been part of three conference championships and three trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Parnham did not play in the contest but the reigning MIAA Defensive Player of the Year ranks eighth in school history in caused turnovers and games started. Smith finished the game with two goals and two assists and is leading the conference in assists this season. He also led the team tonight with five ground balls. Byrne managed to win 14-of-24 in the faceoff circle. Burgin scored a pair of goals and assisted on three more with six shots.
Adrian came out strong in the first quarter and led 4-1 after 15 minutes. Burgin, Doug Boyd, Matt Scherer and Smith scored for the Bulldogs while Scherer and Smith scored in the final 36 seconds. Trine scored the first two goals of the second including a man-up goal by GT Youpel. Smith and Boyd answered with goals to increase the lead to 6-3. Chris Ward scored his second of the quarter making it a two-goal game, but the Bulldogs responded quickly with three straight goals. Brett Maguire made a nice move to get around a defender for his 11th of the season. Cody Schmitt picked up a ground ball off the ensuing faceoff and carried it to the goal scoring his fourth of the season 15 seconds after the Maguire goal. Luke Bill had the final goal of the first half with an assist from Burgin.
The 9-4 halftime lead for Adrian was never really threatened in the second half as the Bulldogs only increased the lead with four goals in the third quarter. Nick Karapas scored at the 10:49 mark and then Bill scored three straight goals with the team's first man-down goal of the season with 6:18 left. Bill increased his goal total to 17 with his fourth goal of the game. The Bulldogs scored once in the fourth quarter as Burgin scored his 28th of the season from Boyd at the 12:14 mark. The Thunder notched the final three goals of the game coming from Andrew Walters, Nick Maher and Jake Ahearn.
Brett Farrelly made seven saves in the win for Adrian. Adam Findlay finished with three assists and four ground balls. The Bulldogs had a total of 30 ground balls and were 1-for-2 in extra-man opportunities.
