Brett Wetzel Named Fifth Head Coach in Bulldogs Men's Lacrosse History

ADRIAN, Mich.--Adrian College director of athletics Michael Duffy has announced that Brett Wetzel will be the new head coach for the Bulldogs men's lacrosse program. Wetzel joins the Adrian coaching staff after serving as a men's assistant lacrosse coach at fellow NCAA Division III institution Kenyon College since 2016.

"I would like to thank President (Dr. Jeffrey R.) Docking, Vice President (Frank) Hribar and Mike Duffy for this opportunity to lead the men's lacrosse program at Adrian College," Wetzel said. "Allow me to also thank Doug Misarti and Jake DeCola for their support and guidance in preparing me for this next step in my career.

"The early success of this program is well known and I am looking forward to returning the Bulldogs to that level. I am very excited to join this Athletic Department and cannot wait to begin working with our student-athletes on and off the field."

In 2017, Wetzel helped the Lords offense rank as one of the best in the country. They averaged 15.08 goals per game, 9.1 assists per game and the man-up offense scored on 44 percent of their opportunities. Kenyon earned three All-North Coast Athletic Conference selections that year.

In 2016, he helped the Lords reach the NCAC Semifinals, earn six All-NCAC selections and one United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American.

No stranger to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Wetzel began his coaching career as the assistant coach at Albion College prior to his time at Kenyon. He had been with the Albion program since its second season of existence, and over the course of five years the win total improved each time while recording double digit wins in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The 2013 and 2014 seasons saw the Britons finish as conference runner-up to Adrian. The 2015 season culminated in the program's first MIAA championship, first NCAA Tournament bid and first NCAA tournament victory.

"I would like to welcome Brett to the Adrian College Athletics family," Duffy said. "Brett's previous knowledge of the MIAA will serve him well in his first head coaching role here at Adrian College. Our men's lacrosse program has a rich history in 11 short years and I believe that his experience in the conference will help us for the future. His good work with the Kenyon offense and playing experience in the nationally-competitive State University of New York Athletic Conference has prepared him well to be a successful head coach."

Before beginning his collegiate coaching career, Wetzel was a four-year starter at defense for SUNY Potsdam from 2005-08. In 2008, he was selected to represent the North squad for the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Potsdam in 2009.
