ADRIAN, Mich. - The start of the matchup between Adrian and Calvin was a bad omen and the Knights used a bad break to their advantage in a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs under the lights on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Adrian (3-8-1, 2-6 MIAA) was attempting to clear a ball in their own end and Jamie Brower had the ball go off his leg into his own net for a own goal to give Calvin a 1-0 lead 2:30 into the match.
It was something that got Calvin off and running and Zach Willis was the Knights top guy as he scored a goal and added two assists. Dino Duratovic gave the Knights a 2-0 lead at 14:05 from Willis. Duratovic got a rebound after a good save from Adrian goalkeeper Zach Zeka and put the ball into a wide open net.
Calvin (10-3-1, 6-1-1 MIAA) maintained first place in the conference by tacking on two more goals in the second half. Willis scored his seventh of the year and a gorgeous play setup by a diagonal pass from the right wing by Chris Nance. Willis raced to the front of the goal and just needed a one-timer at 48:00 to give Calvin a 3-0 lead.
Tyler Vegter scored his third goal of the season from Willis at 52:09 on a play where Willis came in from left wing and fired a ball toward the goal line. Vegter was covered by an Adrian defender but still got enough on the ball to give Calvin a 4-0 lead.
The Bulldogs came on late in the match and Dillon Wilde scored his first goal of the season with an assist going to Akintunde Oluwadare. Wilde jumped into the play as Oluwadare dribbled inside the 18-yard box. Wilde's shot from around 16 yards out just got under the crossbar.
Adrian fared better than the first matchup between the teams with four shots on net and 10 total shots. Zeka made six saves and fell to 2-1 in net for the Bulldogs.
