ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's soccer team opened their season at home Saturday evening against Heidelberg University. The Bulldogs took the early 1-0 lead but could not maintain this advantage as the Student Princes surpassed Adrian by a 6-2 final decision. This loss leaves the overall record for the Bulldogs at 0-1.
The first half saw a stalemate by the two teams through nearly 26 minutes of play until Nick Minshall scored to give the Bulldogs the lead, 1-0, on an assist from Sean Cain. This lead lasted until the 32nd minute when Heidelberg broke through the Adrian defense to tie the game at one. This brought the game to a deadlock once again as the teams went into halftime with a 1-1 tie.
The second half started with Heidelberg gaining the early momentum that would leave the Bulldogs behind. The Student Princes scored two goals in the first six minutes of the half, and Adrian could not recover from this slow start. Heidelberg would extend their lead to 4-1 at the 72nd minute mark before Adrian would again find its offensive stride. Nick Minshall brought the Bulldogs back into the game in the 83rd minute as he scored his second of the game to leave the score at 4-2. The Bulldogs would not be able to break through the Heidelberg defense again and the Student Princes would score two late goals as they took Adrian down, 6-2.
Lino Taormina (0-1) made the start in goal for the Bulldogs as he made eight saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs will see action again tomorrow (8/31) when they host Augusta College for a 3 p.m. start at Docking Stadium.
