ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldogs hosted Alma College Tuesday evening. The Scots took the lead in the second half, but a resilient effort from Adrian forced overtime. The teams remained scoreless in the first overtime period, but the Scots beat the Bulldog defense in the 110th minute in the early stages of the second overtime to take out the Bulldogs, 2-1. This loss leaves the overall record for Adrian in 2014 at 4-7-1 with a 1-5-1 mark in the MIAA.
The first period saw the teams play to a scoreless tie as the Bulldogs fired three shots on the Scots. Adrian fired the first shot on goal for the game as Bayden Lee saw his shot turned away in the 15th minute.
The teams opened the second period with an offensive surge as the Bulldogs tallied five shots while the Scots notched eight. Alma was the first to break the tie as they beat the Adrian defense in the 62nd minute when a header from a cross resulted in a 1-0 Bulldog deficit. Adrian then showed their resilience as they battled back to tie the score in the 78th minute when Shayan Shushtari scored on a header off of a Sean Cain corner kick. This led to the teams looking to secure their victory, but Lino Taormina turned away five Alma shots for the half as the teams headed to over time.
The overtime periods began with a defensive struggle as the teams remained tied after the first period. The Bulldogs had the only shot for this first period as neither team could find their offensive stride and a second over time period was forced. The Scots began this second period by immediately testing the Adrian defense as they fired a cross to the back post that resulted in a goal 28 seconds into this second period and the Bulldogs were downed, 2-1.
Taormina (4-7-1) made the start in goal for the Bulldogs as he made six saves.
Adrian will see action again October 11 when they host Kalamazoo College at 2:30 p.m.
