ADRIAN, Mich.—The Adrian College men's soccer team battled visiting Olivet College to a 0-0 double overtime tie in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action on Saturday evening at Docking Stadium. As a result, Adrian moves to 4-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAA and the Comets now stand at 1-10-1, 0-5-1.
Olivet had advantages of 24 to 8 in shots and 7-2 in shots on goal. Senior Lino Taormina recorded his second shutout of the season by making seven saves in the Adrian net, moving into a tie for first place in the conference with 57 saves. Olivet's Ryan Grashik posted two saves.
Olivet had a couple through-balls to start the first 10-minute extra session but Taormina came off his line to extinguish both threats.
Adrian's first chance came in the 95th minute as freshman Brandon Katona's header went over the crossbar directly from in front of the goal off a direct kick.
The Bulldog defense came up big under a minute to play before the OT intermission as a pass was cleared away at the 6-yard box that resulted in an Olivet corner kick.
In the second extra session, Gregory Petty nearly won the game for Olivet with a blast from 21 yards out that Taormina made a spectacular diving save with his right hand. Then on the rebound, Matthew Henderson's shot was blocked away for another corner.
Olivet's Joey Sieg had a chance to win it with 2 seconds left in regulation as his shot from the top of the box was tipped over the crossbar by Taormina.
Adrian had a great scoring opportunity in the 6th minute when freshman Nick Watkins' shot on the right flank was stopped by Grashik.
Adrian's next contest is 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kalamazoo for another MIAA matchup.
