FREELAND, Mich. - The Adrian College men's soccer team was picked to finish fifth in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) preseason coaches' poll release today (Monday, August 22, 2016) by the league office.
Defending regular season and MIAA tournament champion Calvin was picked to repeat as MIAA champion, receiving seven of the possible eight first-place votes for a total of seven points. Kalamazoo was picked to finish second, earning the other first place vote, with 13 points. Alma (21 points) and Hope (24 points) round out the top four. The Bulldogs earned 35 points to give them sole possession of the fifth spot. Albion (37 points), Trine (40 points) and Olivet (47 points) to finish off the poll.
Head Coach Charlie Edwards enters his third year on the sideline for the Bulldogs. Adrian has shown great strides since Edwards took over the men's soccer program, improving from eighth in the MIAA his first season to fifth last season. The team was one game away from finishing tied for the fourth place spot and a potential post-season berth.
The Bulldogs have their three top goal scorers returning in sophomore Brandon Katona (Detroit, Mich./Dearborn), sophomore Tad Davis (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) and junior Shayan Shushtari (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams). Junior Sean Cain (Northville, Mich./Northville) and senior Mark Proctor (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph's) join Davis as Adrian's top three assist men.
The Bulldogs kick off the season hosting the Beavers of Bluffton University on Thursday, September 1 at 7:00 p.m. EST.
