Bulldogs Fall to Nationally-Ranked Spartans in Double OT at Home

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to No. 11 Case Western Reserve University in a battle that saw two overtime periods.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Case Western Reserve 2, Adrian 1

Location: Adrian, Mich. (Kapnick Field at Docking Stadium)

Records: Case Western Reserve 4-2-2, Adrian 6-1-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

Although the visitors spent most of the opening-half on the offensive, the game was still 0-0 heading into halftime.

The Spartans finally made the board in the 66th minute, gifted a penalty kick after a blocked shot hit the hand of a Bulldog defender in the box. CWRU's Zachary Senft was able to get the upper hand on goalkeeper Spencer Brown for the squad's goal.

Adrian saw a surge of intensity after the blow, becoming more offensive in hopes to even the score. This happened with less than two minutes remaining in regulation as Brendan Koziol was able to chip the ball from the top of the box to a waiting Austin Andres who was finally able to pen is name on that stat sheet.

Overtime period one was a chippy one, seeing a Dayton Rush yellow card in the final minutes. The card followed a series in the Bulldogs' defensive zone when CWRU attempted to put several shots on-goal, as a fellow Spartan had Brown pinned in front of the goal. Thanks to a stout AC defense, not a single shot was recorded.

The second overtime period saw the undoing of the Adrian comeback, as it took CWRU just six minutes into the second extra period to clinch the win and end AC's win-streak.

Not all was lost as the unranked Bulldogs were able to take the No. 11 Spartans into overtime, nearly pulling off an upset.

TOP DOGS

  • Junior Austin Andres' game-tying goal was his first of the season and just fourth of his career.
  • Senior Brendan Koziol who is now ranked second on the team in assists (2), owning the lone assist.
  • Classmate Spencer Brown, who saw action in all 106:31, making a season high eight saves.
