Bulldogs Deny Nationally-Ranked Knights Shutout in Road Loss

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Adrian College men's soccer fell to the Calvin College Knights, currently ranked 3rd in the nation by both the United Soccer Coaches and D3soccer.com polls, on Saturday evening. Despite both teams being members of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), the evening's contest does not count towards their conference records.

Final Score: No. 3 Calvin 6, Adrian 2

Location: Grand Rapids, Mich. (Zuidema Field – Calvin College)

Records: Calvin 11-1-0, Adrian 8-3-0

The nationally-ranked hosts posted three goals in just over 15 minutes, with the first two coming within 25 seconds of each other. Calvin added another score to the board at 29:44, extending its lead to 4-0. A lead in which they would carry into the second half.

Just a minute and 50 seconds into the second half the Knights pushed their lead to 5-0. Their last tally of the game came in the 53rd minute.

Adrian was able to deny Calvin its fourth shutout of the season as senior Zach Combs posted his fourth goal of the season, with 37:10 remaining on the game clock. Combs is now tied with classmate Garrett Miller for the team lead in goals scored.

AC was able to keep Calvin from scoring in the final 30-plus minutes of the contest, as it posted six saves in the span, five of which belonged to Nathan Bresnay.

Spencer Brown, who was dealt the loss, posted two saves in his 59:38 played, before Bresnay was called to relieve the senior.

  • Senior Zach Combs, who denied the national-ranked Knights the shutout with his goal in the 53rd minute.
  • Sophomore Nathan Bresnay who made five saves in his first-collegiate contest, not giving up a single goal.

The Bulldogs return to Docking Stadium on Tuesday, as they open their conference slate with a 7 p.m. contest with Kalamazoo.
