ADRIAN, Mich. – The last time that Adrian defeated Hope in men's tennis the year was 1959, but that streak is now over as the Bulldogs won 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Craft Tennis Complex. Adrian improved to 17-4 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA while winning for the second time in the all-time series against the Flying Dutchmen.
The match began with doubles as is customary and the Bulldogs took two of the three matchups. The tandem of Michael Mertz and Joey Loselle once again teamed up for a win at one doubles with an 8-3 decision over Matthew Culver and Sam Kreps. The Flying Dutchmen evened things up with an 8-3 win at two doubles as Colin McKey and Cody Herbruck defeated Adrian's Alex Amos and Jeff Sophiea played together for the first time this season. Adrian took a 2-1 lead heading into singles as Brandon Brom and Troy Gargrave also teamed up for the first time this season and defeated Jonathan Hoffman and William Yancey.
Brom suffered a tough loss at one singles in three sets against Herbruck. The freshman fell 6-2 in the opening set and then battled back to win 6-2 in the second set. Herbruck got the upper hand in the final set with a 6-2 win. Loselle ran his singles record to 19-2 and dominated at two singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over McKey. Mertz was challenged at three singles against Culver but prevailed in three sets. Mertz moved to 20-1 in singles this season with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 decision.
The bottom half of singles play was tightly contested with the Bulldogs winning at the five and six spots in the lineup. Sam Schuster got a point for Hope with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 10-8 thriller at four singles. Amos defeated Kreps at five singles by the scores of 7-5, 6-2 for his 11th win of the season. Gargrave reached the winner's circle with a 7-5, 7-5 decision over Chris O'Keefe at six singles moving to 15-3 this season.
