ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College men's tennis team spent its spring break in the state of Florida and came home victorious three times in five matches. The Bulldogs now stand at 6-5 overall.

"It was nice to see three solid wins on our trip," said Adrian second-year coach Maxim Sukalo. "The guys are listening, bonding together and trusting their teammates. I'm proud of their dedication to the challenging practices and process.

"Off the court, we went to Clearwater Beach, Medieval Times, Universal Studios and a Detroit Tigers spring training game."

Senior Michael Mertz and sophomore Brandon Brom paced Adrian by going 4-1 at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Brom won his last four matches in straight sets after losing his opener in three tough sets, including 10-7 in the super-tiebreaker. In addition, junior Joey Loselle and Mertz went 4-1 at No. 1 doubles.

The trip to the Orlando area began in heartbreak as St. Mary's-Minn. edged Adrian 5-4 on a victory in No. 2 doubles that was decided on a 7-5 tiebreaker.

The following day, the Bulldogs rebounded with authority by crushing both Ohio Northern, 9-0, and Otterbein, 8-1. Adrian did not drop a set against the Polar Bears as sophomores JonRhind, Jeff Sophiea as well as Brom, Loselle and Mertz all won two matches. That solid performance continued hours later as the Bulldogs didn't give up a set in five singles wins over the Cardinals. Sophomore Mitchel Bulger was one of five Bulldogs who were double-winners.

Adrian split two matches on its final day of competition, falling 8-1 to Rose-Hulman before bouncing back to rout Wartburg by the same score. Brom led the way with two singles wins at No. 3 and 1-1 at No. 2 doubles. In the seven-point win over the Knights, the Bulldogs won all six singles matches.

The Bulldogs are next in action on Saturday, March 19, at Purdue Calumet for a noon start. Adrian also is scheduled to play Roosevelt there.
