ORLANDO--Senior Jon Rhind paced the Adrian College men's tennis team with a pair of victories on Monday, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of Hanover College to open their spring schedule here at the USTA Center. Hanover improves to 2-6 overall during the 2017-18 season while the Bulldogs fall to 1-3.
The day began with the Panthers, who come from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, claiming two of the three doubles matches. Rhind teamed up with freshman Ronald Ducharme to edge Jonathan Helmers/Mitchell Minniear in a No. 1 matchup, 8-6.
Rhind picked up his second win at No. 6 singles over Roger Trombley, 6-3, 7-6.
Also earning points for the Bulldogs were senior Jeff Sophiea (ADRIAN-M) at No. 2 singles, where he defeated Jonathan Helmers in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. Also, Nathan Waterbury swept Alec Bates by identical 6-3 scores at No. 5 singles.
Brent Barrett (No. 4 singles, No. 3 doubles) and Dakota Smith (No. 3 singles, No. 2 doubles) led Hanover with two wins apiece.
Adrian returns to the court on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) against another HCAC opponent at the USTA Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to have live video carried by USTA National Campus.
