ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College men's tennis team officially made its home debut this spring a successful one on Wednesday, turning back NAIA-scholarship Indiana University-East 6-3 at the Craft Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs improve to 3-6 in the 2017-18 campaign, while the Wolves out of the River States Conference fall to 5-5 overall.
Adrian took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition as senior Jeff Sophiea and sophomore Nathan Waterbury teamed up at No. 2 to blitz Colton Shipley/Alex Shelley, 8-1, and sophomores Tanner Wilcox/Kyle Haines handled David Bennett/Brayden Williams at No. 3, 8-2.
The Bulldogs increased their advantage to 5-1 by claiming the first three singles victories: No. 5 Waterbury over Shelley 6-1, 6-2; No. 6 senior Jon Rhind against Williams 6-0, 6-1; and No. 3 Wilcox versus Shipley, 6-1, 6-0.
Haines, Waterbury and Wilcox led Adrian with two wins apiece.
Pablo Munoz and Maximiliano Faundez paced IUE with Nos. 1 and 2 singles triumphs as well as pairing up for a No. 1 doubles victory.
The Bulldogs' original home opener for the 2018 calendar year was supposed to be March 21 versus Ohio Northern, but that non-conference contest was moved to Wednesday, April 25, due to weather.
Adrian is scheduled to play Albion College next to open the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association slate, hosting the Britons at 4 p.m. Friday on the Craft Tennis complex.
