ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's wrestling team opens conference action today at Alma and then heads to Illinois on Saturday.
The Bulldogs wrestle at Alma at 7 p.m. tonight in the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association competition of the season. This marks their first MIAA competition since 1983-84, the last season the conference sponsored the sport.
"I'm extremely excited," said Bulldogs third-year head coach Bill Schindel. "This is a huge step forward for our program and the MIAA. We must be focused on our goal and can't take anything for granted.
The Black and Gold are off to an excellent start to the season and continued its winning ways in a dual victory at Lakeland on Sunday. Adrian enjoyed a dominating 51-6 victory over the Muskies as the points and margin of victory (45 points) set modern-day program records since the College resurrected wrestling for the 2015-16 season after a 31-year absence. And with a 5-1 dual-record, the team is off to its best start since the mid-1970s and has already doubled last season's win total (2-8).
"We have made tremendous strides from two years ago," Schindel said. "However, we still have a lot of work ahead of ourselves if we want to accomplish our goals as a team and program. The coaching staff has done an excellent job to get us where we are. This was a very quick turnaround."
On Saturday, the Bulldogs will send junior varsity wrestlers to Elmhurst College's Al Hanke Invitational in Illinois.
"This is mainly for the extra guys," Schindel said. "I'm looking for guys to continue to work hard and be ready for their opportunity. This is another step in the right direction for our program."
