FREELAND, Mich.--For the second week in a row and third time this season, an Adrian College student-athlete has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week. This time, the conference weekly award goes to sophomore Noah Nieman (Palmyra, Mich./Blissfield High School) as the MIAA announced on Monday.
Nieman finished 4-1 and in second place at 149 pounds on the weekend at the Wheaton College Pete Willson Invitational in Illinois, including a pin over Drew Mandell of Olivet College with 38 seconds left in their semifinals match. It was a thrilling victory for Nieman who trailed 10-4 after the first period, 14-8 after two and 16-14 when made his move to take down Mandell and terminate the match. Nieman defeated three D3wrestle.com Top-25 wrestlers along the way and lost to No. 14 Luke Hernandez of Mount Union in a 4-minute, 9-second fall in the championship. He helped the Bulldogs score 41-1/2 points to place 19th in the 38-team field, as the Wheaton-hosted event is the second-oldest nationally in collegiate wrestling behind the NCAA Championships.
On the season, Nieman ranks second for the Bulldogs with 20 victories against 14 losses. He also has six pins and four technical falls to his credit.
Adrian sophomore Devon Pingel also won MIAA Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 21 and Dec. 10.
The Bulldogs hit the mat again on Thursday when they host nationally-ranked Olivet in a MIAA match, starting at 7 p.m. in the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
