Duo Advance to Day 2 of the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Central Region Championships

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.--The Adrian College men's wrestling team earned 25 points on the first day of the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Central Region Championships to place 13th out of 13th of 19 schools on Friday. Sophomore Devon Pingel and freshman Collin Lewis remain alive in the brackets at their respective weight classes of 184 and 285 pounds. The two-day event, hosted by Wabash College in the Knowling Fieldhouse, concludes at 10 a.m. Saturday with an opportunity for that Bulldog duo to qualify for the national championships.

Pingel is into the championship semifinals of his bracket after defeated Cash Thompson of Ohio Northern by decision, 4-0, and Dylan Seaton of Alma by a 14-6 major decision. Pingel, who improves to 27-5 on the season and is listed as a contender as the 11th-ranked wrestler in the latest D3wrestle.com individual rankings, will face Thomas More's Avery Jones in his first bout tomorrow for a berth in the championship match on the line.

Lewis advanced to the championship quarterfinals in his flight with a win via disqualification. He lost his first match to 10th-ranked Drew Kasper of Otterbein and unbeaten at 27-0 by technical fall, 15-0, in 5 minutes and 36 seconds. Lewis, however, bounced back by eliminating Brian McNamara from Case Western in a thrilling tie-breaker, 5-1. The former looks to keep going first-thing Saturday against Heidelberg's Christian Climer in a loser-out bout.   

National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) ranked squads No. 5 Baldwin Wallace (94.0 points), No. 4 Wabash (91.5), No. 7 Mount Union (80.0) and No. 15 Olivet (70.0) occupy the top four spots in the Central Region team standings after Day 1.

Other Bulldogs who won at least one match but were eliminated from advancing on Day 2 include 125 freshman Mateo Diaz (defeated Jimmy Murphy of Thomas More, 7-6, in consolation round one); 141 senior Dominic Paterra (defeated Andrew Castaneda of Olivet, 4-3, in consolation round one); 149 sophomore Noah Nieman (pinned Toby Warrington with Muskingum, 1:56, in championship round one); 157 freshman Zach Altman (downed Otterbein's Joey Bradberry, 6-4, in consolation round one); 165 freshman Derick Duvall (pinned Tristan Faworski of Mt. St. Joseph, 4:34, in consolation round one); and 174 sophomore Bryant Moore (won by technical fall over Lucas Brewer from Alma, 4:42 by 18-0 score, in championship round one).
