ROANOKE, Va.--Adrian College sophomore Devon Pingel finished his first season with the Bulldogs on Friday on the first day of the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships here at the Berglund Center. The results did not occur the way he had expected.
The seventh seed in the 184-pound bracket, Pingel went 0-2 and, unfortunately, did not advance to Saturday's final day.
The Lapeer, Mich., product began his morning with a tough second-round match-up against Joshua Glantzman (20-4 won-lost record) from Merchant Marine, who prevailed in a 7-1 decision. In his first match of the consolation round during the evening session, Pingel met 32-5 Kyle Peisker from Chicago. After a scoreless first period, Pingel opened the second period scoring with an escape. But Peisker went ahead for good on a reversal and broke the bout open with a four-point nearfall on the way to a win by 9-1 major decision.
Pingel (28-8) has made an immediate impact in the Adrian lineup by reaching the NCAAs and becoming first Bulldog since 1979 to earn All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association accolades.
Pingel, who led Adrian in victories and pins (9), is the third Bulldog in the modern era of the program (since 2015-16) to represent Adrian at the NCAA Championships, joining Zach Rieger (285) in 2017 and Angus Arthur (197) in 2016.
