ADRIAN, Mich. - The women's basketball team for the second straight game pushed one of the MIAA's elite programs to the brink as they fell 55-52 at home to 4th-ranked Calvin College a week after dropping a three-point game to Hope College.
The Bulldogs had a three-point attempt to tie the Hope game on Jan. 14 and had not played since that contest. The fresh legs showed in today's contest as they pushed one of the nation's best to the final possession. Adrian could not get a three-point shot off today like they did against Hope. A turnover led to Calvin stealing the ball and running out the clock.
The Bulldogs shot 38 percent but struggled to 3-of-16 shooting from three-point land. Adrian did a much better job at the free throw line going 11-of-13 for the game. Calvin shot 40.8 percent overall and likewise to Adrian struggled to 4-of-14 from behind the arc. The Knights were 11-of-15 from the foul line. Despite the sizable height advantage, Calvin was outrebounded by the Bulldogs, 35-29.
Senior Katie Ross led Adrian with 16 points in 30 minutes. Sophomore Senneca Scott added 10 points off the bench and grabbed five rebounds in 29 minutes. Junior Carissa Verkaik led Calvin with 24 points and went 10-of-15 from the floor with three steals and two blocks.
The Knights improve to 17-0 overall and 9-0 in the MIAA but today was the closest game they have played all season. Calvin has been beating their opponents by an average of 24.4 points per game. The Knights appeared to have the game closed out up 54-45 with 1:34 left. Sophomore Lauren Rhoads hit a big three-pointer for Adrian and after a Calvin miss on the other end, Ross hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 54-50 with 29 seconds left. Adrian fouled Kayla Engelhard on the inbounds and she made one-of-two at the line. Scott then made a layup with six seconds to go and AC called a timeout.
Calvin attempted to inbound the ball and it went off Engelhard out of bounds to set up a final play for the Bulldogs. Rhoads lost the ball and Jill Thomas grabbed the steal as the Knights escaped.
