Free Throws Key in 83-73 Loss to #2 Hope

ADRIAN, Mich. – Trips to the free throw line was one key ingredient for the second-ranked Hope College Flying Dutch on Saturday as the Adrian College women's basketball team fell 83-73 at Merillat Center Gymnasium. The Flying Dutch made 26-of-32 at the foul line compared to 16-of-20 for the Bulldogs. In addition, turnovers were also key as Hope had six compared to 16 for Adrian. Those miscues led to a 20-11 edge in points off turnovers for the visitors from Holland.

The two teams put together a competitive first half as the Bulldogs fell behind early by eight points (18-10) before coming back to take a 23-21 lead with 8:59 left. The Flying Dutch put together a 10-3 run in the final 4:51 of the half to take a 42-35 lead into halftime. There were five ties and seven lead changes in the first half. Hope shot 48.5 percent in the opening 20 minutes and Maura McAfee led Hope with 14 points. Adrian shot 48 percent including 5-of-8 from behind the arc and Lauren Rhoads scored 12 points.

Hope ran off the first five points to start the second half and built their lead to 50-35 before a pair of free throws by LaQwana Dockery put Adrian on the board in the second half at the 16:12 mark. Hope built their lead to 18 and held a double-digit advantage until 35 seconds left when a Casey Fougerousse layup made it 80-71.

Rhoads led the Bulldogs with 22 points and hit the 20-point plateau for the third straight game. The reigning MIAA Player of the Week went 7-of-10 from the floor and grabbed three offensive rebounds in 27 minutes. Dockery and Fougerousse each had 10 points out of the starting backcourt. The Bulldogs hung tough on the boards trailing 40-39 as TraeVie Shelton had 10 rebounds. Marissa Cotton connected on all four of her three-point attempts and finished with 13 points and three rebounds in 17 minutes.
